National Lottery

Improving Futures – New Programme

The BIG Lottery Fund have released the following details. The Improving Futures programme will provide funding for more effective and joined-up support to help families with multiple and complex problems. This support will be delivered by partnerships that bring together voluntary sector organisations and public services. The partnerships will be locally based – and for the first time engaging not only children’s charities, but those that can help address families’ housing, health, employment and other needs.

The programme will fund up to 20 partnerships across the UK, each receiving a grant of up to £900,000 to work with families with children aged five to ten years old. It aims to fund only the very best proposals and BIG will also fund a robust evaluation of the programme with a view to understanding how their success can be replicated elsewhere.

The Big Lottery Fund believe that every child deserves the best start in life, but they know that some grow up in difficult circumstances. Some families experience multiple and complex problems – for example, poor health, unemployment, debt, and housing problems – which can affect their children’s wellbeing and life chances. The Improving Futures programme aims to improve outcomes for children within these families.

BIG have designed this programme following extensive consultation, and whilst they recognise that significant work is already being done locally, they also believe that additional funding could help reach and improve services for more families with multiple and complex needs. They want to support the best proposals, so will call for initial expressions of interest in the programme, before inviting a limited number of applicants to submit full applications. Please note the following points about expressions of interest:

• Expressions of interest must be from partnerships led by voluntary sector organisations, but those partnerships may include local authorities and other voluntary and public sector partners.

• The focus of Improving Futures is on helping families where their oldest child is between 5-10 years of age.

• No more than one expression of interest should be made per local authority area, and BIG are asking that local authorities sign the form to indicate their support, thus ensuring appropriate dialogue and that proposals are additional and complementary to existing provision in an area.

A meeting was held earlier this month in relation to the fund, another is planned for early April. I will keep you informed as to the outcome of these meetings.
