Comic Relief Funding: Young People and Alcohol

Purpose: The Comic Relief Fund: Young People and Alcohol aims to fund work for young people aged 11-25 who are misusing alcohol or drinking excessively. It will support services that aim to reduce the levels of young people’s drinking, create greater awareness of the dangers of harmful drinking and provide direct support to them.

Who can apply: Young People aged 11-25 who are misusing alcohol or drinking excessively.

Level of Funding: Grants usually vary between £25,000 and £40,000 per year for a maximum of three years.

Comic Relief's New Older People's Programme

Purpose: The aim of the grants programme in 2012 is to help older people cope with the challenges of this particularly harsh financial climate and the resultant exclusion and hardship it is causing. This programme will be aimed at supporting older people (65+).

Who can apply: Charities and Voluntary Organisations.

Level of Funding: There is no overall maximum grant and we expect to make awards of varying sizes. This programme will not make grants under £10,000.

Comic Relief's Young People and Mental Health

Purpose: To support work with young people aged 11-25 with current mental health problems.

Who can apply: Voluntary and Statutory Agencies.

Level of Funding: Grants usually vary between £25,000 and £40,000 per year for a maximum of three years and rarely exceed this upper limit.

Comic Relief's Sports for Change

Purpose: The aim of this programme is to understand more about how sport can play a part in delivering positive change within the lives of individuals and communities.

Who can apply: Charities and Voluntary Organisations.

Level of Funding: The maximum grant size in this programme is £100,000 in total.

Elmley Foundation - Small Grants

Purpose: This scheme is for community groups in Herefordshire and Worcestershire planning arts events or purchases. There are two funds - Events and Activities and Arts Equipment.

Who can apply: Community Groups.

Level of Funding: A maximum of £1,000.

Deadline: 26th January 2012.

Tesco Community Award

Purpose: The Tesco charity Trust gives funding towards providing practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit children, the elderly and adults and children with disabilities, living in the local communities around our stores in the UK.

Who can apply: Community and Voluntary groups.

Level of Funding: Between £500 and £4,000

Deadline: The deadlines for the Grants to support children's welfare and/or children's educations are 31 January and 30 June. The deadlines for Grants to support elderly people and/or adults and children with disabilities are 31 March and 30 September.

People’s Postcode Trust

Purpose: The People's Postcode Trust, a trust set up by the “People’s Postcode Lottery” in April 2009, has announced that the next funding round will re-open for applications on the 9th January 2012.

Who can apply: Grants are available to small organisations and community groups operating in the areas of:


• Poverty Prevention

• Advancement of Health

• Community Development

• Public Sports

• Human Rights

• Environmental Protection.

Level of Funding: Grants are around £2,000

Tudor Trust Grants

Purpose: The Trust makes grants across the following areas: youth, older people, community, relationship, housing, mental health, substance misuse, learning, financial security and criminal justice. The Trust is also open to hearing about work in area the Trust has not funded before.

Who can apply: The Trust aims to support smaller community, voluntary and charitable organisations.

Level of Funding: The Trust makes grants in the region of £19 million per year and is looking to make around 350 projects per year for up to three years.

Deadline: There is a two stages application process and applications can be submitted at any time.

Baily Thomas Charitable Fund

Purpose: The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund is a registered charity which was established to support projects in the area of learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected by learning disability by making grants to voluntary organisations within the UK and the Republic of Ireland working in this field.

Who can apply: The Trust consider under learning disability the conditions generally referred to as severe learning difficulties, together with autism. In this area, they consider projects concerning children or adults. Application for funding is normally considered for capital and revenue costs and for both specific projects and for general running/core costs.

Level of Funding: Grants from £250 upwards.

Deadline: 1st March 2012 for research applications and the 1st May 2012 for general grant applications.

Foyle Foundation

Purpose: This national charitable trust operates a Main grant scheme supporting charities whose core remit covers either learning or arts and a Small grant scheme covering small charities in all fields.

Who can apply: Charities, state schools and special schools can also be supported.

Level of Funding: From £10,000 to £50,000.

Deadline: Applications are accepted all year round.

Football Foundation – Grow the Game Funding Programme

Purpose: The Football Foundation has announced that it is accepting applications for funding through its “Grow the Game” programme. Through the programme, funding of up to £5,000 is available for projects that increase participation by both players and volunteers within the game.

Who can apply: Applications are welcome from organisations that are 'not for profit' and planning to set up two new football teams over the next two years. To be eligible for funding organisations must have a signed constitution (with a dissolution clause), child protection policy, equal opportunities policy, bank statement and income/expenditure records.

Level of Funding: Up to £5,000.

Worcester Community Foundation

Purpose: Community Foundations are charities located across the UK dedicated to strengthening local communities, creating opportunities to meet needs and tackling issues of disadvantage and exclusion. Established in 2003, the Worcestershire Community Foundation (WCF) is part of the national network of Community Foundations.

Who can apply: During the last 8 years WCF has been able to link donor funds, from individuals, families, companies and government to Worcestershire’s diverse network of local groups; targeting grants to make a genuine difference to the lives of local people.

Level of Funding: To date, up to £800,000 has be distributed throughout the County.

Deadline: Ongoing.

Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation

Purpose: Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation supports the communities around its nationwide network of branches by making donations to charities working in those areas. Generally, the Foundation will consider applications for community based projects which aim to provide relief of suffering, hardship or poverty, or their direct consequences.

Who can apply: Registered charities.

Level of Funding: Grants in the range of £250 to £1,000.

Deadline: Applications can be submitted at any time. The Trustees meet four times a year.

The Truemark Trust

Purpose: The Trust makes donations to mostly small Iocal charities dealing with aII kinds of disadvantage, with preference to neighbourhood-based community projects and for innovatory work with Iess popular groups.

Who can apply: Small charities and voluntary organisations.

Funding: In 2010, the Trust made 126 grants ranging from £1,000 to £3,500.

Deadline: Applications can be made at any time; the Trustees meet quarterly.

Community Buildings

Purpose: Big Lottery Fund has announced that it is making an additional £75 million of funding available to revamp and update community building through its Reaching Communities programme. This funding is available only in certain areas of England.

Who can apply: Parish and town councils and voluntary and community organisations in certain areas of England.

Community Fund

Purpose: The Community Fund awards grants to community, voluntary, or self-help groups to run projects that meet the following criteria:
  • address a community issue
  • provide a good long-term benefit to the community
  • support co-operative values and principles
  • ideally be innovative in its approach
Who can apply: community, voluntary, or self-help group.

Level of Funding: Between £100 and £2,000.

Deadline: Applications can be made at any time.

Church Urban Fund – Mustard Seed

Purpose: This programme provides grants to enables churches and faith-based organisations to engage in social action by supporting them to initiate or develop community work.

Level of Funding: Up to £5,000.

Who can apply: Small (income under £150K) faith-based groups that are based in the top 10% deprived areas or working with marginalised groups.

Deadline: This is a rolling programme with no deadline.

Enhancing Communities

Purpose: Enhancing Communities is SITA Trust funding programme for community improvement projects. The programme supports projects that make physical improvement to community facilities, sport projects and historic buildings and structures.

Who can apply: Not for profit organisations, community groups, parish councils, local authorities and charities.

Level of Funding: The programme offers grants under a fast-track, small grants scheme for projects up to £10,000; and a large grant scheme for projects up to £50,000.

Key Criteria:

- Projects must be within three miles of a qualifying SITA UK waste treatment site (previously applications were only accepted from projects located within 10 miles of a licensed landfill site owned or operated by SITA UK)

- Clear evidence of need and support for the project
- Tangible outputs with clear benefits to the local community
- Unrestricted public access for a minimum of 104 days per year

Deadline: The next deadline for Large Grants (Core Fund) are 19 March and 23 July 2012 (10am).
For the Small Grants (Fast Track Fund), the next deadlines are 10am on 10 February, 16 April and 18 June 2012.

Nationwide Foundation Small Grants Programme

Purpose: The Nationwide Foundation, which works towards a just and caring society by enabling people to take part in building better futures in their communities, is currently accepting applications for funding under its Small Grants Programme. The Small Grants Programme has the following aims:

- Money Matters – which aims to tackle financial exclusion affecting disadvantaged groups across the UK
- Home Matters – which aims to address housing issues and homelessness among vulnerable groups in the UK

Who can apply: Registered charities with a yearly income of less than £500,000.

Level of Funding: Grants of up to £5,000.

Key Criteria: Applications will be assessed on their own merits and against Nationwide funding priorities.

Deadline: Applications can be made at any time.

Trusthouse Charitable Foundation

Purpose: Trusthouse has two overarching themes

- Rural Issues: rural in this context means cities, towns, villages and areas with 10,000 or less inhabitants. The foundation is interested in, for example, projects providing transport to the elderly, contact networks for young disabled people, projects that encourage a sense of community such as community centres and village halls etc…

- Urban Deprivation: in this context, only urban areas classified in the latest government Indices of Multiple Deprivation as being in the lowest 20% are eligible.

In addition from July 09, Trusthouse has started a three-year themed grant, which will fund projects addressing mental health issues for prisoners and ex-offenders.

Who can apply: Local and national charities or not-for-profit organisations.

Level of Funding: The average grant is £6,000 though they can range from £1,000 to £30,000.

Key criteria: Within the overarching themes mentioned earlier, Trusthouse funds projects in three broad areas: Community Support; Disability and Healthcare; Arts, Education and Heritage.

Deadline: The Grants Committee meets in January, April, July and November. Applications must be received at least 8 weeks prior to a meeting.

The Big Tree Plant

Purpose: The Big Tree Plant, a campaign to encourage people and communities to plant more trees in England's towns, cities and neighbourhoods has announced that its funding programme is currently open for applications. A total of £4.2 million is available to support community groups to plant trees in towns, cities and residential areas throughout England. The trees must be planted in streets or in green places that are open to all to visit or where local people will benefit from them. Groups working in areas where more trees would help to improve residents‟ quality of life are strongly encouraged to apply for the funding.

Who can apply: Not for profit groups or organisations in England, such as charities and voluntary groups that represent the interests of the local community, are eligible to apply. Groups must be non-governmental and non-profit distributing. Local authorities cannot apply directly but projects in partnership with local authorities are welcome.

Funding: Between £500 and £25,000, for up to 75% of costs.

Deadline: 14 March 2012

The Mark Leonard Trust

Purpose: The Mark Leonard Trust is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts and focuses on environmental education. In particular the Trust seeks to support projects that focus on:
- finding practical ways of involving children and young adults; sustainable agriculture and bio-diversity
- sustainable transport, energy efficiency and renewable energy and youth work to supports the rehabilitation of young people involved in anti-social or criminal activities

Who can apply: Not for profit organisations and organisations with a charitable purpose.

Level of Funding: Not stated, previous grants range from £1,000 to £30,000.

Deadline: Applications can be submitted at any time.

Arts Council Touring Programme

Purpose: The Touring programme is designed to encourage collaboration between organisations, so that more people across England experience and are inspired by the arts, particularly in places which rely on touring for much of their arts provision.

Who can apply: Individuals, Organisations, Partnerships, Networks and Consortia. National portfolio organisations and non- National portfolio organisations can apply.

Level of Funding: The minimum grant is £10,000

Deadline: Applications for the first round are now open, and must be submitted online by 5pm on Friday 2 March 2012. The programme has six funding rounds for applications between March 2012 and February 2013. Application can be submitted at any time during this period.
